Hello!

The seeming best version, translated by a fellow named Mango, is both very expensive, and a review on Amazon says that the translation suppresses the Roman identity of Constantinople. The very thing I'm trying to prove in a project right now is the romanitas of Constantinople ... so that's important to the edition I cite.

Is anyone aware of a good copy of this in English?

Thanks in advance,
booth

There is another, which I have at home. As soon as I get there, I will check it and let you know. Chronicles are my specialism, so if there is anything you think I can help with, feel free to PM me.

The (much slimmer) volume that may help you is edited and translated by Harry Turtledove (University of Philadelphia Press, 1982).

The 'fellow named Mango' is Cyril Mango, the great Byzantinist, and the volume you are referring to is huge. If you could get it from your library, it would be worth the effort. In the meantime, the Turtledove translation is good.

You might also look at C. Mango, Byzantium: The Empire of the New Rome. But it will depend on exactly what you are trying to do, and to the scope of your work.
