Alice, this is really making the news on health-oriented sites. Supposedly, it accounts for the long life and good health of residents of the Greek islands. Any info on how to buy or make it?

LOL!! You may have asked the wrong person!

I *hate* it and will never drink it! It tastes and looks like mud.

(a bit of trivia: it used to be called 'Turkish coffee' in Greece!)

Many thanks. It is worth a try, since coffee is one of my great weaknesses - next to dark chocolate, that is. grin

I tried the coffee. It's not bad, but it is a real eye-opener for those of us used to American coffee. It is definitely strong.

Russian Coffee

2 ounces vodka
1 ounce Kahlua
1 teaspoon amaretto almond liqueur
5 ounces hot espresso
2 teaspoons sugar

Pour all into a glass holding a silver spoon, mix, and garnish with sour cream.

Better than Greek coffee! LOL!

Alexandr forgot to mention that you need to have the silver spoon replated after stirring biggrin

I'm not a coffee fan, though I drink it regularly and I drink it strong - though heavily sugared - but I'm with Alice on this, I'd as soon drink motor oil.

Many years,

Neil

In Rome a few years ago, I was staying in the guest house of one of the religious societies alongside a group of about 6 Greek monks.

In the refectory, there was an extremely large stainless steel 'tank' which dispensed coffee that was more wonderously strong and black than anything I had ever tasted before. On each table, meanwhile, there were empty, stainless steel coffee pots that were meant to be filled by guests at the dispenser.

The first time I saw the Greeks, one of them got up to fill one of the pots which I, naturally, assumed was for his whole table. That is, until each one of them got up to fill a pot. In the end each monk must have consumed at least a pint of the stuff before heading out for the day.

I was impressed to say the least.

The Jordanian grocer that we buy our coffee from also adds cardamom.

Oh, I love coffee of the Middle East, Greek, Turkish, Egyptian, even though Serbian's not exactly Middle East, I think I've had this coffee at a Serbian Festival, etc... I'm sure it's the same recipe for all of them. It is great stuff. Good find.

We Rusyns follow a similar recipe, except you substitute Becherovka or slivovitca for the vodka and skip the rest of the stuff...just kidding... cool

The cardamom sounds good. I will have to try that.

What I liked about Greek coffee, was the little Greek lady on TV who demonstrated how to make it. She said Greek coffee needs some good cookies to go with it. grin
