Dear ByzanTN:

The religious divide that the Western media have drawn is a red herring. The Greek-Catholics are concentrated in the far West of Ukraine. Big-O Orthodoxy prevails everywhere else, including the capitol Kyiv - a Yushchenko stronghold.

Yushchenko himself belongs to the UOC-KP and was pitcured attending services two Sundays ago with Patriarch Filaret.

A more apt religious distinction would be between the MP and the other Byzantine Rite chruches, including the UOC-KP the UAOC and our own UGCC.

Prior to the elections, all the Christian Churches in Ukraine but one called upon the government for fair elections. The exception was - you guessed it - the Moscow Patriarchate.

Anyway, by my humble reconing, religious divisions in Ukraine play a relatively minor role in the current situation.

Yours,

hal

I spoke with some people in our Church on Sunday most are Russian many from Moscow or Ukranian and in short the comments had been along the lines of let the people vote again, have an honest count with international monitoring or participation and whoever wins so be it. Nobody want to see any civil war, violence or political unrest.

In Christ,

Matthew Panchisin
