XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX WED SEPT 10, 2003 11:56:25 ET XXXXX
VATICAN THUMBS UP ON MEL GIBSON'S CHRIST MOVIE
**World Exclusive**
An influential Vatican cardinal is about to endorse Mel Gibson's PASSION, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.
The controversial Mel Gibson-directed drama about the last 12 hours of the life of Jesus Christ will be praised -- unconditionally -- by Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos, the prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy.
The endorsement may pit the Vatican against the Anti-Defamation League, which expressed concerns that scenes depicting Jesus' crucifixion at the hands of Jews and others will fuel anti-Semitism.
Gibsons artistic choices make the film faithful to the meaning of the Gospels, as understood by the Church, says Cardinal Hoyos in an interview set for release in Italy.

I was very happy to read that the Vatican has endorsed Mel Gibson's film. Mel Gibson has accepted a great challenge in making this film, and I really hope he succeeds in this endeavor.
Of course, he has his critics, but remember that many of them seemed to have jumped to conclusions based on reading a stolen draft of the script.
Perhaps we should be asking fewer questions about the film and more questions about whether the critics are being fair.

Mark Alan brings up a good point, that all of this is so speculative until we get to see the movie (which will hopefully be soon) . Yes, LT, Cardinal Hoyos is a great man (although Johan will disagree with us on that since he was appointed by John Paul II). It was primarily he who was responsible for reconciling Bishop Rifan and his entire separated diocese of Campos in Brazil which said the Tridentine Mass and was allowed to continue to do so after reconciliation. (I'm soo tempted to make a remark about your reception into the Church which will hopefully be soon but I'll refrain...
