Prior to the beginning of the Philip’s Fast-Advent we will enjoy this year at St. Gregory’s Byzantine Catholic Church (2005 Mohawk Rd, Pittsburgh, 15241) a wonderful concert performed by the Slavjane Folk Ensemble. This will take place on Saturday, November 9th, starting at 6:30 p.m. with a traditional Slavic dinner, followed by the concert. Tickets are Adults: $25.00, Children (12 and younger): $15.00. Make Checks Payable to St. Gregory Church. Tickets are available by contacting the parish office. No tickets will be sold at the door due to limited seating. Mark your calendars to see this dynamic and dedicated group who display the Slavic heritage and culture through song and dance. Given that the original meaning of "ethnic" (when used as a noun) is something akin to "heathen", I find uses such as this one unfortunate.

As a Canadian where multiculturalism is part of our Charter of Rights & Freedoms, I believe that I share the vision of senator Paul Yuzyk (who will apparently be commemorated on a stamp in the near future), who believed that citizens should not be divided into groups such as ethnics/non-ethnics. If French restaurants are never referred to as "ethnic", why are we adopting the terminology of people who not that long ago considered themselves to be our betters to refer to our traditional foods?
