Hello all!
Vatican confirmed Pope Francis' trip to Turkey this morning. He well be there for the feast of St. Andrew, November 30th.
The official programme has him down for a Divine Liturgy, presided by HH Bartholomew. It says the Pope will be speaking, I presume after the liturgy, not during.
Still, is this a first for a Pope? To participate in a public celebration of an Orthodox DL?
According to the official schedule, the only public mass will be Saturday, the 29th.

Still, is this a first for a Pope? It would be very surprising if it were, considering how many plain ordinary Catholics have attended, or in some cases attend on a regular basis, Orthodox liturgies.

On 30 November 1979, the feast day of the Holy and Glorious Apostle Andrew, the First-Called, and also Feast Day of the Throne of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Pope John Paul II of Rome, of blessed memory, together with his entourage, visited the Ecumenical Patriarchate and attended the Divine Liturgy that was celebrated in the Patriarchal Cathedral.
