Dear Friends,

Could you share your experience in this regard?

What's with the breathing exercises?

And how do you handle the temptation to picture Christ in one's mind - are you supposed to do this?

Hello Alex,

You might want to take a look at
http://www.monachos.net/index.shtml. They always have a lively discussion on The Jesus Prayer.

Although breathing exercises accompanying The Jesus Prayer are not "required" and even sometimes discouraged, they can help. Breathing in while saying "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God" and exhaling on "have mercy on me, a sinner". It has a very relaxing, calm effect.

For me, it's not difficult blanking out all picture and thoughts from my mind :p . You might want to concentrate on feeling the presence of the Lord in place of picturing Him. You can say The Jesus Prayer any where at any time throughout the day. It is recommended that you NOT pray looking at an icon.

Also, there is a book "Way of a Pilgrim" that would be very helpful in understanding The Jesus Prayer. There are also numerous other books on this subject.

I'm sure there are more posters here that will give you more advice. Saying The Jesus Prayer is truly a great blessing.

Dear Loretta,

Thank you!

Is there a Saint Loretta?

I know of the Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto - are the two names synonymous?

In the book "Manjava Skete" published last year by Cistercian Publications, the translater says in the introduction that the Ukranian Orthodox monks at the skete prayed the Jesus Prayer without all the breathing instructions. The monks wanted to have a traditional monastic life, but somehow the instructions on breathing (which go back centuries) just didn't transfer culturally to their time.

I, too, feel the same way. I use my Prayer Rope every day, but totally disregard anything about special breathing. I just try to stay focused on Our Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God. Yes, I am an American of Eastern European background and those breathing instructions are from another time and place. (I'm glad I've read about them and know about them, but I can't relate to them.)

ANd to use a phrase from another thread, "I am not a 'liturgical packrat,' in fact, I keep trying to simplify my prayer life and everything I do.

Oh, and the other question: I think of Our Lord as a Presence with me, as in always being in His Presence. Sometimes I make a point to think of Him as He's depicted with a beard and I like to think of Him in a white robe. But that's just because I'm so human and those human images help me. (I still have a long way to go in my spiritual life -- but I'm on the road and that's what counts.)

Dear Monastic Beginner,

Thank you for that reference - I've ordered that book!

The Skete Manjavski has its own locally venerated saint, the Ven. Job Knyahinitsky and I don't know if he has been locally glorified or what.

This Skete was known for its strong opposition to the Union of Brest-Litovsk and I'm anxious to read that book!

Dear Daughter, smile

I wish I had a daughter, but I see that you are His!

I'll invoke Our Lady of Loretto for you - Fr. McNichol has an Eastern icon of this image.
