I was traveling and attended the Divine Liturgy at Byzantine catholic Church. This is the Byzantine Church I attend when I am visiting this particular area. To my surprise Father did not annoint wih Holy Oil following the Divine Liturgy of Pentecost. I was under the impression that the annointing was done after services on major holydays. In fact I don't recall hat this byzantine Church ever annointing. So I ask what is the traditon? Any recommended suggestions for readinds

Well, annointing at the end of Divine Liturgy is not correct. That means that you did not annoint at the end of Vespers (or during the Canon at Matins if you served the All-Night Vigil). Therefore, no one should be annointing at the end of Liturgy.
Don't get all caught up with this problem. We have much greater problems in our church.

And by the way, this annointing only happens on feasts with Litya. Otherwise, it's just a blessing from the priest at the Canon of Matins when you go up to kiss the gospel and icon. At the end of the Liturgy people can come up to kiss the cross.

My post was not meant as a criticizm. For the Orthodox Easter I attended services and following the services we were annointed with a most fragrant oil. This reminded me of a time many years ago (when I first had my drivers license) Our family had attended the divine Liturgy and we were annointed with holy oil. Driving home (it was a cold day and the heat was on in the car) the whole car was filled with this wonderful fragrance. This current Easter when we were annointed with the holy oil it was also extremely fragrant. It was a wonderful memory.
But, I attend both Byzantine and Orthodox services coming from a mixed marriage and traveling alot now that I am retired I visit the nearest Byzantine , Orthodox, Melkite and Ukranine churches. Most of the churches I attended if it is a major holyday annoint with the Holy oil.
Additionally, as a youngster I recall if there was a major feast day/Holy day during the week we were annointed with holy Oil the following Sunday. I know we did not attend Vespers or Matins as a child since we had to travel by train to get to church.
So this is new to me. But I would like to learn more about the custom. Any suggestions?

Before I arrived at the Melkite parish where I have been for the past six years, I attended Divine Liturgy at the local Byzantine Catholic parish, and the priest did give the annointing at a Sunday Liturgy. This parish does NOT do vespers.
My own Melkite parish does annointings only at vespers for feasts. We DO do vespers.
And I do agree, it is not worth having a stroke over.

This may sound stupid and trivial, but, being the Pharisee that I am, I noticed that everyone in this thread misspelled the word Anointing as Annointing.
But like the person said in the last posting: "it is not worth having a stroke over."
