I have heard the Liturgy of Saint James is being used more frequently in some Orthodox Churches. Is the same true of the Byzantine Catholic Churches? Thank you.

In Christ,
Anthony

Dear Anthony,

Yes, indeed!

Previously, only the Great Church of Constantinople used this liturgy on the Feast of St James in October.

Now, more and more Churches are using it and this sometimes up to three times a year (Feast of St James, Sunday after Christmas (2nd feast of St James) and Pentecost).

A number of these Churches are also using the Liturgy of St Mark on his feast in April (May if you are Old Calendar).

And then there's a Liturgy of St Peter . . .

Representatives from the Antiochian Orthodox Church have sometimes "murmured" that St James' Liturgy is their ancient Liturgy and that they should be using it daily.

God bless,

Alex

I once served a Liturgy of Saint James with a Ukrainian Catholic priest. It is very moving at a certain part while the priest is praying petitions, the people continuously chant, "Remember, O Lord."

I'd like to see the St. Mark litugy.

I don't see why we couldn't celebrate St. James's liturgy on weekdays as an option, for instance.

Dear Anastasios,

Excellent point!

There was also the Clementine Liturgy and owing to the Ukrainian Church's relation to St Clement, I would love to see that served as well. It too is beautiful and moving, and was, as I understand, served universally in the Church at one time.

The problem is that like the Coptic Liturgy of St. basil and ours, the Syriac Liturgy of St. James is now quite different from the Liturgy of St. James that we Byzantines use.

And remember, St. John Chrysostom was Antiochene!

I have heard from a reliable source that the Liturgy of St. James is only to be served on the Feast of St. James, just like the Liturgy of St. Basil is only to be served on the designated 10 times in the year.

What's the verdict, Orthodox Catholic?

Dear Daniil,

We have such a good rapport here that I feel that I am related to you or something . . .

The Ukrainian Catholic Church has a translation of the Liturgy of St James (Fr. Zinko did one in Brazil) and those parishes who wish to use it (my guess is that their name is not "Legion") would use it on his October feast.

The Greek Orthodox do use it on the Sunday after Nativity since St James is commemorated on that day as well.

My Greek source tells me that, with the permission of the Bishop, this Liturgy may also be served on Pentecost, but very few Greek parishes do this. Three times a year is the number for this increasingly popular liturgy.

I don't know of any Ukrainian parish that would do the Liturgy of St Mark - if you ever find out, please let me know!

I think we should also reintroduce the Clementine Liturgy since St Clement is one of our apostolic Fathers. Maybe one day.

Alex
