There is a monastery called All Saints Greek Orthodox Monastery in Calverton New York, about 30 miles from my house. I was wondering if anyone can tell me which jurisdiction they belong to. Thank you.

Dear Anthony,

Do they by any chance have a website or any other information? To my knowledge, the GOA has nothing in that area as far as monastic communities.

Dear Father Anthony,

The only information I have is that it was established by a Father Gouvis (I don't know his full name).

I learned of it from this quote in the Greek News:

"We can communicate in our clients' native tongue. We have developed relationships with churches and Greek groups in Suffolk County. We represented St. Paraskevi Church in Greenlawn and the Port Jefferson Assumption Church We also helped Fr. Gouvis and the All Saints Greek Orthodox Monastery in Calverton get financing for their construction through Long Island Commercial Bank and donated furniture from the hotels we own to the monastery. This was all largely pro bono work."

Anthony

Dear Anthony,

I just checked Orthodoxy in America's website which is very comprehensive and transcends jurisdictional lines, and came up with nothing for that monastery. I also checked the last update and it was in late June of this year. No one seems to be claiming this one.

Dear Father Anthony,

Thank you for checking. I want to make sure it is canonical because I was interested in visiting.

Here are the websites for Church of the Assumption [kimisis.org] and St. Paraskevi [stparaskevi.org] Church, maybe the Fathers there will have more information about this monastery.

Just an update, here's the listing for the monastery:

All Saints Greek Orthodox Monastery
1676 Middle Road
Calverton, NY (New York) 11933-1466
Phone: (631) 727-8505

EDIT: I also did a search and found that the Priest's name is VASELIOS GOVITS, the spelling is incorrect in 'greeknews'. Fr. Govits was or still is pastor of Assumption, the latest article [kimisis.org] I found was dated 2002.

The above address also lists for "All Saints Greek Orthodox Mission".

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America's Yearbook lists Rev. Presbyter Vaselios B. Govits as retired in 2003, the updated Feb 2004 Yearbooks lists:

Rev. Presbyter Vaselios Govits
124 Belle Terre Road
Port Jefferson , NY 11777

Dear Anthony,

There is the Saint Nektarios Monastery in Roscoe N.Y., and it is authentic and affiliated with the GOA. I think it's about a two hour drive from NYC, (if that's where you live)...and it is truly a lovely place. smile
