Hello, I am a Roman Catholic looking East. I'm comfortable with my Faith, but I've been reading about Orthodoxy and I'm a "lurker" at least until now, of this board. I do attend Mass weekly, I have a daughter starting Catholic school, but I have a real curiousity about the East. I have attended two Byzantine masses, and am praying. My curiosity began two years ago at the charismation of a friend's son. I also have some Orthodox friends who have been very helpful in exploring... I have purchased icons, and practiced moments or periods of silence daily...I've never felt Western all my life, its like a coat theat doesn't fit. Can you offer some advice? Secco

Secco,
Welcome! You have come to the right place. Keep attending divine liturgy, ask questions, learn as much as you can both from worship, and from posting here. We are in communion with Rome. We respect the magisterium, even though in the past we have suffered in so doing. Nevertheless, the Divine Liturgy is an enormous blessing.
Ask as many questions as you like.
Is your family attending Byzantine Catholic Liturgy with you?

Dan L Thanks! Right now its hard for all of us to go together...My kids are very small... There is a real curiosity...both my wife and I raised Catholics..asking similar questions. I have learned a lot intellectually, and experientially. What I don't want to do is waunder like some here have spoken of, one year, Roman, then Byzantine..for now, and then maybe something else. I did that as a teen...and young adult. Good experiences, but I know I won't do it again. I expect through it all to be strengthened. I have less of a desire for intellectual study and more "listening" to my heart. I like this board, and am grateful to everyone here. Secco

"Christ is Risen!" "Indeed He is Risen!" Secco:
In conjunction with your attending Byzantine Divine Liturgies, you might want to explore two short texts concerning Eastern Catholicism. These will help you to gain a better understanding of the Liturgical life of Eastern Catholics as compared to the Western Church.
"Eastern Catholics in the United States of America" by the Committe on the Relationship between Eastern and Latin Catholic Churches.
"Light of the East, A Guide to Eastern Catholicism For Western Catholics" by George Appleyard, a Priest of the Eparchy of St. Josaphat in Parma, Ohio. This short easy to read book is a very good comparison of the Eastern and Western Churches.
Both of these books are available at the Holy Trinity Monastery P.O. 990 Butler, PA. 16003
Yours in Christ! Simeon

Simeon, Thanks be to God! Christ is Risen indeed! Thank you for the book titles! That helps. I've been very happy with the help I'm getting from a lot of people. You are all like family here, as a "lurker" I got to know many of your brothers and sisters here. Secco

Simeon,Anastacios,Alex,Everyone, Thank you! I want to tell you this week has been blessed since posting! I found a book by Fr. Appleyard,"accidently" at Kerners of all places...Its a nice intro to the East. A day later, I was at Barnes and Noble and found a copy of The Way of the Pilgrim... That one I plan to pray on,and consult a Byzantine priest on,as recommended by one of you...Christ is Risen, indeed! Secco

Dear Secco,
What has always attracted me to the Christian East is how the East teaches us to first embrace God and then think about him.
Its mystical perspective on God is a welcome antidote to western rationalism that I also found among Roman Catholic scholars.
We are hungry for the Great Mystery of the Holy Trinity and the Church of Christ.
Let us drink at the Fountain of Christ's Side!
Alex

Gladly! I am always "quick" to immerse myself in intellectual "pursuits"...God laughs at that, at least in my experience,... Sometimes, the most powerful messages come simply, briefly, and succinctly....or in one visual image. Secco
