+Glory to Jesus Christ!
Glory be to Him Forever!!

Hello all,

In reading the thread in the "Byzantine Town Hall" section about the new Italo-Greek mission and parish [Linked Image], I got to wondering...What do the Italo-Greek tones sound like? Are they more Slavic or more Greek or more Arabic? Could someone describe them for me? I would love to know.

If there were any Italo-Greek communities near me, I would visit, but for now I'll just have to ask. :-)

Thank you so much!

God bless,
Liz

GOD ALONE IS GREAT!

Dear Liz, As far as I know, the tones would be similar to the Greeks. I have a video of the episcopal consacration of His Grace Sotir Ferrara, Bishop of Piana degli Albanesi, Sicily. The ceremony took place in 1989 at the cathedral of San Demetrio. The liturgy was mainly in Greek. I obtained this video from Our Lady of Grace Society whose website I have posted on Byzantine Town Hall-Italo Greeks. (The video is narrated in Italian and parts of the ceremony are in Italian and Albanian)
I know this may not be much help to you, but perhaps we will hear from others. PAX, Vito

Chaire, Liz!

The Italo-Greek tones are Greek. But there are small diferences - the progres of Greek chant in the 12th - 20th century is in the Italo-Greek chant not (so strong) reflected, they are more ancient, not influenced by the Near East musical feeling.

My father has an irmologion from Grottaferrata, an Italo-Greek monastery near Rome. There are many ancient chants, 11th - 12th century.

God bless you
