A Fr. Thomas Hopko story:
A clergy meeting degenerated into a fierce debate between Liturgical rigorists and the pastorally sensitive. The former group argued for the taking of all litanies and strict adherence to all rubrics and required prayers. The latter group pointed out the need for contextual awareness and the avoidance of "phariseeism." They agreed to submit the issue to a wise monk to see which group should "win." "What should we do?" they asked the monk. The monk's response: "It doesn't matter what you do. Do either way. But whatever you do, be sure it done solely for the glory of God, and there is to be no murmuring against or condemnation of others who would do differently. The Devil is the winner in all other cases."
