Slava Isusu Chrystu!

My 11-year-old boy has decided to attend the Ukrainian Catholic Church with me, rather than the Latin Rite traditionalist chapel (SSPX) with my wife.

This decision was the result of the Altarboy Convention this past weekend. He has been going with me a few times every month for the past two years, but he has now "made" his decision.

This is my problem, the my parish has no religious ed to speak of, so I'll have to take to giving him a full Eastern Catholic education myself.

I was concidering the "Light for Life" series, but am not sure if this is age appropriate.

At the Trady chapel, he already studied the 10 Commandments, basic prayers (Latin), the Seven Sacraments.

Any suggestions?

S Bohom,
Chris

Subdeacon Paul Voijta of the Romanian Catholic diocese has been modifying the Montessori religious education system for Byzantine Christians. If this is something you may be interested in, check it out on www.romaniancatholic.org. [romaniancatholic.org.]

You have a wonderful opportunity to teach your son the Catholic faith.

I taught catechism to my own five children for fifteen years. I am Latin Catholic so I used Latin catechisms, picture books, lives of the saints, occasional visits to our parish church to visit the Blessed Sacrament, participating in pro-life events and a parish retreat for students preparing for 1st Holy Communion. The resources available to you, both from parents' suggestions and religious materials are many.

I say this as a way to encourage you to teach your child.

Others on this Forum will help you choose and use Eastern catechetical materials.

I pray that the Holy Family of Nazareth give you every blessing.

Paul

Thanks, Paul, for alerting me about this thread, smile I don't spend as much time cruising here as I used to.

Chris, we have homeschooled our kids from the beginning, our oldest well into high school. I have used all sorts of things out there over the years. I have primarily relied on Orthodox religious educational materials.

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd which Daniel alluded to and which Subdeacon Paul has worked hard on to modify for Greek Catholic use is excellent, and I wish it had been around in that form 15 years ago. As with most Montessori-approach programs, there is much hands-on, the kids have a mini-church, etc. etc. This really interiorizes the material as the child combines the sensual and gymnastic with the academic.

There's far more specifics I can go into about the plusses and minuses of specific programs, Catholic and Orthodox, and to avoid me boring everyone you can send me a PM if you want more info.
