just picked up from the BBC News Website Church to help Greek Priests wed [http]

Church to help Greek priests wed

The Greek Orthodox church admits married clergy

The Greek Orthodox Church has begun a campaign to help young men who want to become priests find a spouse willing to accept their austere lifestyle.

Modern Greek women are said to be increasingly unready to marry men whose vocation calls for long beards and black robes to be worn at all times.

The Church says it wants to prepare women for marrying into the priesthood
Greek Orthodox clergy are allowed to be married, as long as the wedding takes place before they are ordained.

Because of this rule, they are not allowed to remarry if the first match ends in divorce.

A meeting of Church leaders this week pledged to establish a committee that would look into "pastoral methods to obtain and prepare priests' wives", French news agency AFP reports.

The scheme may consider educating women about marriage to a priest so as to reduce the risk of later misunderstandings.

A Greek Orthodox clergyman, who did not wish to be named, told the BBC News website he was confident the 2,000-year old Church would overcome its latest difficulty.

And no - I did NOT get this from the Onion Dome even though the topic has come up there a while ago

Dear Anhelyna,

When I was in university and was contemplating the married priesthood, there were girls around who were LOOKING to marry a priest.

Some even asked me if I was going into the seminary - when I said I didn't know, they lost interest . . .

Singing liturgical services and dating - I had little experience in either enterprise at the time!

So, then the dating ad should read:

OSS seeking OSF for HM. Must desire LF(EP).

translation:

Orthodox Single Seminarian seeking Orthodox Single Female for Holy Matrimony. Must desire Large Family (Evangelization by Procreation)... smile

What I find very amusing is the picture that BBC News placed in the article. What a poster boy for married priests! :p I think a better picture would have been of a younger priest, perhaps with more stylish glasses, and a wife.

So much for stock photos.

Dear Alex:

But in your humor is a lot of truth. Singing together is a spiritual experience in and of itself and, in my humble experience, is a very strong tie that binds.

I respectfully submit that it is very natural to develop an attraction to someone of the opposite sex with whom one has travelled the liturgical year in song.

Yours,

hal

Dear Hal,

Well, at least you appreciate my humour here . . .
wink

I agree!

There is nothing more comely than a modest, pious young woman, singing in a church choir.

Put a handkerchief on her and . . . that's great!

Sorry I can't help the seminarians one bit. Women, money, and fish flee from me like the plague! And if God did send a woman to me, just my luck it would be one that wouldn't iron! biggrin
