Hello Alex

It was St. Franics who started the tradition of the Christmas Creche as well as the Latin tradition of the Stations of the Cross.

The Jaslickare Tradition seems to be far older than St.Francis and adds ancient pagan rituals of welcoming the sun back following the shortest day of the year.

I can still remember hearing the men and women walking through our little coal mining town on Christmas Eve and Christmas night singing and of inviting everyone in for some holiday refreshment. I always loved the songs that contain the verses tell the listeners that no more would be sung about the Nativity unless there was some refreshment.

Gee, I'm getting all tingly think about Christmas... guess I have to look for some holiday music!

Dear Mark,

Interesting point on the refreshment!

I have a picture of the Christmas group going about a Ukrainian village singing and asking for refreshments.

Those participating also dressed up as the devil and Pontius Pilate etc. Some of their costumes are downright scary, hardly something you'd want to see on a Nativity Eve.

It is almost as if Hallowe'en and Christmas have been linked together, and visitors from Ukraine have indicated that our Hallowe'en does indeed conjure up (no pun intended) memories of some of their Christmas traditions.

OK.! OK!!

I leave for Minneapolis in the morning and I'll bring my Kolyadi tapes with me to play in the rental car.

Nudge! Nudge! You guys are just such pressers.

(Love ya' all!) And if I stop at a light and people look at me at a looney for playing Christmas tapes, I'll just tell them that I have two psychotic friends who have 'commanded me' via secret thoughts, to play this music in August.

Blessings!

>>>An example of the Orthodox Church doing this is in adopting the Translation of
the Relics of St Nicholas as an Orthodox Feast, even though, at the time, the
Greeks considered this act by Italian merchants to be little more than an act of
theft by Latins of Orthodox relics.<<<
