Dear Friends,

Recently, while driving through the city, I spotted a new Catholic religious goods store I had not seen before and so I stopped to pay a visit.

The fellow who runs it is a Catholic from Korea who makes a lot of his own rosaries, "tenners" etc. - quite beautiful, I must say, very "user friendly" and the like. He was sitting at his desk making more as I perused through the store.

As he saw that I was interested in the various prayer beads he had, he then pulled out a bag that contained, as it turned out, longer strands of beads that he had also made.

These were "Buddhist" rosaries made of cedarwood beads, 108 on each set. I suppose he makes them for Korean Buddhists and others (they are just beads, there are no representations or other symbols on them).

I bought a pair of these beautiful beads for my collection and I thought one could use them to pray the Jesus Prayer.

Just a question - is that O.K.?

Also, if anyone is interested, here is his e-mail address:

Dear Friends,

My question has sort of resolved itself - I added a cross to it . . . smile

Dear Brad,

"Holy Family Art" is at 563 Parliament Street (near Wellesley Ave.) Toronto.

It's a bit "down" from you, but if you ever want to go visit, do give them a call at 416-925-9974 as they're not always open.

Cheers!

Dear Alex,

I'm not sure, but shouldn't the beads be blessed by a priest?

Do the prayer beads look like that?

Dear Extraecclesiam,

Similar, but with 108 beads and they are made from cedar.

I've seen those beads in your picture before . . .

Dear Sam,

I don't see why not - one may get them blessed by a priest as well.

One may use any counter to count the Jesus Prayer, including one's fingers.

The twelve divisions of the four fingers are often used by Eastern monks to count the 40 "Lord have mercy" at the end of the services.

One simply points to each part with one's thumb, going back and forth three times to make 36 and then one points to the four fingers themselves to make the number "40."

Also, Ethiopian prayer staffs often have 50 divisions at the top that one may use one's thumb to count 50 prayers - mine is just like that.

Christian monks have used pebbles, moving a number from one bag slung over one shoulder to another slung on the other shoulder.
