Hello everyone!

I am married to a Bzyantine Catholic and my child has been baptized in the Bzyantine Church. I was also married in the Bzyantine Church. I was raised Roman Catholic and attended 12 years of RC school.

I am seeking information or suggestions of books that I may purchase so that I can fully understand the Byzantine faith and teach my son.

Also, should I look to attend CCD classes?

My husband can't answer all of the questions that I have and I feel that since I attend the Byzantine Church, that I need to have more insight so that I can fully put it into practice for me and my family.

Any help that you can give me is most appreciated!

Thanks!

GLORY TO JESUS CHRIST!
GLORY TO HIM FOREVER!

Hi,

Try to get a copy of a book called A GUIDE TO THE DOMESTIC CHURCH.

It's put out by the Melkite Diocese but is a wonderful teaching tool about Eastern Christian homes and other customs and traditions.

There are several good childrens books about the Eastern Church. I guess a lot depends on how old your son is.

You may want to contact the IKON AND BOOK SERVICE in Washington,DC they have a wonderful book section as well as ikons, CD's & cassettes and all other kinds of things used by Eastern Christians.

They do have a web site and an 1-800 number. The website is www.iconbook.org [iconbook.org] and the phone is 1-800-ASK-IKON (or maybe ICON)

Ask for Elaine and she'll help you!

Hope this helps....

Thank you very much. You have been extremely helpful.

My son is only 19 months old, but I think that I should start reading now so that I am familiar with everything by the time he is really ready to learn about religion. Plus, I want to feel part of my Church and not just a person in the pew.

Thanks again.

Hi,

What a worthy goal. In addition to the reading, continue to experience the faith of the Byzantine Church. If there are any adult education/enrichment classes at your parish, do join them. Contact your pastor and inform him of your desire to learn. I'd expect he be more than willing to help. I noticed you lived in PA, if possible, take part in the Great Fast retreats sponsored by Archeparchy of Pittsburgh at Antiochian Village, Ligonier, PA.

IMHO, the only way parents can "teach" their children is by example. If parents live the faith, the faith will have a far greater impact if "caught" rather than "taught".

Hi!

There are some wonderful books out there for children!

One called, CHRISTINA GOES TO CHURCH, is for small children. It show a little girl going to church with her parents and brother and talks about the ikons, what the priest is doing and what is going on. There are great color drawings and very simple language.

Like I said earlier, give the Ikon and Book service a call. They an entire section that is just books for kids!!

hope this helps...
