Glory to Jesus Christ!
I have a question for those who are aware of the rules regarding transfer of rite. If one transfers to the Byzantine rite in the Byzantine (Ruthenian) Catholic Church, does this preclude serving in minor orders for another Byzantine rite Church, e.g., the Melkite or Ukrainian Catholic Church?
I ask this question because I will be moving at least twice in the coming years (grad school, then job). This means I may not be near a Ruthenian Church, and I would worship in another community instead. May God bless you abundantly,
David

This is what I have been told by the pastor at the Melkite Greek Catholic Church.
To transfer into the Melkite Church, all a Roman Catholic has to do is sign a paper stating this intent. Roman Catholic parents may have thier children baptized in the Melkite Church, thereby giving them membership within it.
At the time of a marriage, if one of the parties is Roman Catholic, they may transfer by signing a paper stating this intent.
To transfer the other way, from Melkite, or any other eastern Catholic Church, to any other church requires the approval of Bishops.
As I said, this is what I have been told.

Dear David,
If I understand your question, membership in the Byzantine Church is not defined soley by local juristictions. For example, if you are baptized in a Ukrainian parish, in a Ukrainian diocese, and move into a Ruthenian parish, or vice versa, or to the Melkite etc., you may take a full part in the life of a new parish, without question of a change of rites.
Of course, being called to ministry (reader, cantor etc.) and being ordained as such, is a question for the bishop. If an ordained reader then moved into a new parish, he would have to approach the bishop of the new place, parish or diocese, to inquire about the use of such a ministry. I do not think it would be courteous to automatically assume that one would take a place on the basis of a ministry confered in another diocese or in another context.
Just my thoughts on the subject...
Elias

Thank you both for speaking with clarity and with charity.
