I will probably be relocating to the Pittsburgh area this summer and would appreciate the Forum's thoughts on Byzantine Catholic (including Ukrainian) parishes to join. I am seeking a traditional (un-Elkoized) interior, better than decent homilies, something of a parish "spirit", a good choir and (hopefully) some surviving use of Slavonic. Welcome your thoughts.

John,
Our own Father Elias' parish of St. George in Aliquippa fits your bill. It is Ruthenian. Also Father Valerian was recently assigned to St. George Ukrainian in Pittsburgh and if the parish wasn't traditional before it will be now. St. John Chrysostom in Pittsbugh's own Ruska Dolyna (Rusyn Valley) is beautiful and tradtional as well. I'll post more as I think of them.

According to the Pittsburgh Ukrainians calendar, St. George's parish is closing. http://www.pghukrainians.org/calendar.htm#2002-04 -------- April, 2002 28 Dedication of the Closing of St. George's UCC Pittsburgh, PA -------- I have no idea what "dedication of the closing" means, but I have heard elsewhere that the parish is being closed. Is this true?

St. John's Ruthenian Church on Jane Street, South Side Pittsburgh is coming back strong after many years of decline. Fr. Elias
Rafaj is helping revitalize the parish very well, they use a fair amount of Slavonic, and the church is in the process of being redecorated inside with new iconography -- it looks quite promising.

Go to Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Ambridge. You may not like it, but there are very nice people there (my family  ). Fr. Mike is a really great guy -- and he does sermons relating to Disney movies. Daniil

Wow! What a luxury to be able to 'choose' a parish. For most of us, it is "take it or leave it" or drive XXX miles.
You crazy Pittsburgers!!!! (By the by, I have a business trip upcoming. Where to go for good Slavic food --WITHOUT pierogi from Wal-Mart?)

With respect, you have quoted the calendar of St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church incorrectly. The reference is to the dedication of "St. George CLOSE," which is the housing development/retirement community connected with the parish. A "close" in this sense is often used by Anglicans to describe the grassy or garden area which is "enclosed" by the buildings of a cathedral or monastery.

Oh, boy! This assumes that Disney will ever do their historical ... err, hysterical agenda-driven interpretation right. I'd stay away from this New Anti-Catholic Hermeneutic. I'd rather hear a sermon based on the Gospels or any other part of the Scriptures. Forget Mickey Rat. If there are any two institutions that promote a utopian world without God and rarely, if ever, portrays the Church in good light - it is Communism and Disney.

As far as Good liturgies you might try Holy Ghost parish in McKees Rocks. The singing is great and they have an iconostas

Thanks for the info, brother Secco!! (Sometimes I think that it is genetic for us Eastern cradles -- of whatever persuasion!! -- to inextricably link our liturgical practices with culinary ones. It is no accident that we have different feast day foods, and fast-day foods - special breads, pastries, soups, etc. Hmmm. I think I'm going to start a thread on this sometime!!)

I would enjoy the thread! Near my home are
two churches who make great pierogi every Thursday,St Vladimir's and St. John...
I'm not Eastern,by blood....but,I love the languages,customs and culture...particularly
Russian...I always love learning more.

Close in this context refers to the grounds and buildings surounding a Church. It has nothing to do with the closing of the parish. Michael
